Theoretical Design

1. The building typologies i will be researching are shopping/retail and sport facility.

2. I am researching these two typologies because I am interested in creating either a retail store that goes beyond the ordinary or a sports facility that takes on a different identity.

3. The specialty of these building types are a Snowboard and/or Skateboarding Retail Store and a Sports & Motion Control Video Games Facility or possibly combining both into one.

4. The examples i will be researching are:

  •      The Burton Flagship Store in New York City
  •      The Neil Barrett Store designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in Tokyo, Japan
  •      Chill Factore designed by Faulknerbrowns Architects in the UK
  •      The Lego Store in New York City
  •      The Eudacare Sports Facilities designed by Ten Arquitectos in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico
  •      The Bastard Flagship Store by Studiometrico in Milan, Italy
  •      The NBA Store in New York City
  •      Ski Dubai in Dubai United Arab Emirates
  •      The Laax Freestyle Academy in Laax, Switzerland
  •      The Nintendo World Store by TGP Architecture in New York City
5. My goals in working with these building types is to create an interactive retail experience and to incorporate new technologies.

6. The program elements that i see included in my building at this point may include but are not limited to:
  •      An indoor freestyle snowboarding arena
  •      A snow tunnel
  •      A workshop for board assembly
  •      Storage
  •      Retail area for snowboards and bindings
  •      Retail area for skateboards, wheels, trucks etc.
  •      Retail area for winter apparel and snowboarding boots
  •      Retail area for other apparel and sneakers
  •      Retail area for accessories and other merchandise
  •      An indoor skate park
  •      Bathrooms
and/or for the sports facility idea...

  •      Retail area for all types of sporting equipment
  •      Retail area for video gaming equipment
  •      Tennis room
